Creating a brand

1. Stars as constructions
JLS auditioned for X factor in 2008 and came second place. At the time there was space in the industry for a new boy band, they were all good looking boys who would be very popular among Young girls. They were normal boys looking for a chance in the music industry but their image from the start of x factor and the end of x factor is completely different. They have been taught mannerisms o how to act like a professional music star.

2. Stars as products
The Saturdays are the big new girl band as there are no popular girl bands at the moment. Girl bands have an immediate appeal to both boys and girls in the mainstream audience and for young girls can also be looked up to. However they are only popular at this moment in time as there is a gap in the market, in a couple of years a new girl band will become more popular than they are.

3. Stars as embodiments of ideologies/cultures
Beyonce is looked up to by many males and females and she is often referred to as "queen bee" She embodies the ideology of strong independent women who can do everything they want and do not need a man to support them.

4. Stars as personalities
Adele is represented as a very real and honest perosn she is often critised by her weight but belives that her job is only to make music and she should not care about her appernece as much as other stars but for this she is very well respected.

Style and conventions of music videos

Music Videos

1. Video in which the lyrics does not match the visuals

Using this style of music video is primarily to grab the audience attention and also to create something different. The fact that the song is so irrelevant to the video creates an image in the audience's head and they would want to watch the video again due to the fact it was remember-able or quite comical. I think using this style of music video in my work would be very creative however i would have to make sure the comical side would not show too much.

2. Performance
Where the band or artist is filmed whist recording the song.
Using this style of music video has a massive effect on the institution, as it is cheaper to record and is also more effective to the audience as it makes them look more genuine and the audience believe that their talent is real and the artists have a bigger fan base. It makes the audience feel as if they are watching the artists perform in person  Using this style in my music video may be an option as it can be very easy to film but also effective.

3. Narrative
The video and lyrics tell a story and usually feature the main artist and the lyrics may reflect a moment in their life.

Using this style of music video is very effective as it draws in attention to the audience and brings them closer with the audience to make them understand the hardships which the artists goes threw in daily life and many people will be able to relate to the story which is being told, the narrative normally consists of a breakup/ makeup scene. I think i may use this style of music video as it is quite simple an also draws in a lot of attention making it realistic that everyday teenagers and young adults will be able to listen and understand the lyrics to as narrative music videos have quite sad story's.

4. Interpretive
The music video will interpret visuals directly into a story which matches the lyrics of the song.
Using this convention is a very simple and easy way to create a music video and can be cheap for the institution however it not not very effective for the audience as it may seem childish or can be seen as a joke as these music videos usually have young girls featuring in them . I do not think i will be using this convention as it may look unprofessional and could easily have an unintentional comical twist when watched by the audience.

5. Impressionist
The music video which matches the mood but not the lyrics of the video.

I think the institution uses this convention to make the audience think and create links between the video and also the lyrics and identify the juxtapositions this makes the audience pay more attention to the music video and makes them want to watch it again to understand how the video matches the lyrics and this causes re-play ability which is very important for music videos. I think using this convention would make my piece of work very interesting however this has to be carefully thought out in order for the effect to take place om the audience.

6. Surrealism
Works to a feature of the element of surprise, there is no logic to when and what happens in the music video.
Again the institution would use this to grab the audience attention and it is only a niche audience which this style of music video would appeal to as the mainstream audience would not like the fact that the song is violent and has inappropriate or horrific imagines playing. I think i would not use this genre of music video in my work as it may be too difficult and our mainstream audience would not appeal or would be able to relate to the song.

7. Animation
where the whole or part of the music video is animated.
The institution would use this style of music video to aim at a particular audience and would only use it to perhaps give a certain image of the artist off to the audience, such as a very cute and soft artist. The audience would in most cases be young and this is why i do not think i would consider using animation into my music video.

8. Intertextuality
When one form of media text (such as the music video  refers to another. for example a parody which is a comic version of the original.

Often a parody version is made by fans of the artist or in some cases people  who do not like the artist to make fun of the song. The institution of the original version of the song has no concern as parody versions are normally made by you tube users. The audience often find it very funny but i would not think of doing a parody of a music video as it looks very unprofessional.
